Howth is one of my favorite places to visit when I go to Dublin. We’ve always set aside a day or two to go to Howth on every trip. I ran into these two dogs on my last trip, having the time of their lives on the pier. Dogs always simplify things for me and I love watching how much joy a simple walk brings them. A good reminder to enjoy the simple things.
Howth is a little fisherman’s town just a few minutes from the center of Dublin. It’s a perfect day trip if you can’t roam too far from the city but want to see some beautiful coastal views and a doable hike. There is a wide selection of pubs and restaurants where the seafood is as fresh and plentiful as the air.
There are often seals looking up at you from the water. There is a beautiful coastal walk. There are multiple places to grab a Guinness. There is even a hidden beach behind the DART station. There is also a little market set up on weekends.
So many people think the inky things worth seeing in Dublin are in the city centre. But one of the best things about visiting Dublin is that it’s so easy to get out of the crowds and enjoy amazing views and great walks. Everything is so close and convenient. You don’t have to hop on a train for two hours or rent a car to get to another county to enjoy amazing coastal views and scenic hikes.
Howth does get quite touristy in the summer, and tends to be a favorite destination for large droves of Spanish students who come to Ireland to learn English, but actually just spend the entire time speaking Spanish to one another. I personally prefer to avoid them (and tourists in general) at all costs so Howth is more enjoyable not during peak summer months.
the cliff walk can be cube a bit treacherous on wet days. So I’d definitely try to go on a dryer day if you want to do the full walk. Nothing Wei g with just hanging out on the pier and then grabbing some seafood chowder and Guinness if you can’t seem to find a dry day.
